Dragoon Sketch

Inspired by Dragoons Cavalry costumes.
This was done on span of 3 days (2-3 hours session each) everyday before work.

I am going back to fundamental and gonna do more sketches for the upcoming few weeks.
I realize I am really envious of people who can draw really well and I am gonna strive to up my drawing skills!

Do let me know which design do you like out of these three!

Automata Street

Another even tighter shot of the townscape. Taking the chance to experiment with color and value grouping to try to push the story telling component of the image.

This time around I tried to take the story and try to take more liberty in showing it visually. I wanted to show the lady on the foreground to have a hesitant personality and perhaps often fearful of things, thus I put her in the dark. She is being pulled into the light by the samurai guy as if lighting up her life. Also tried to reflect that feeling of hope into the landscape itself (ray of light on the sky) I also wanted the surrounding to be cooler in temperature in comparison to the character hand, as if the body heat radiating the image.

I ended up removing the smoke effects since I thought it distract the viewer from the ray of light, also contradicting the feeling of burst of hope.

I have also been kinda worried that my color could be getting more and more saturated yet in a not so good direction so I tried to study from Krenz Cushart's work since a his work uses lots of gray yet feels so vibrant!

This time around I was more careful on where I used the saturated color but I tried to be less controlled when it comes to the edges and details since I felt the last two paintings was so controlled that it felt rigid and less lively.

I really hope to one day able to be as painterly as Craig Mullins!

Automata Town

Some shot from above, exploring the townscape.
Trying to imagine what kind of town could be beyond the gate.

I was imagining a town ran by blacksmith and researcher, developing automata mecha as the guardian and weapons to protect the town. The city are multi layered just like japanese castle. Since the smiths are important members of the town they get to live on the higher ground. Its not only for distinction, being nearer to the mountain also help to regulate the temperature of the smith and considered as sacred.

This is a continuation of the steampunk project that I posted previously. I ended up flipping the sketch for better composition. Please feel free to give me feedback on how to improve it much further! :D

Automata City Gate

Something I have been wanting to draw.. Japanese steampunk town.

I took some inspiration from Onimusha and Kabaneri. The architecture was based on the quick sketches that I did when I was on holiday. I will scan those and post it up when I am free.

Here is the early sketch.
I think it was much more exaggerated in the sketch. What do you think? Let me know!
