Dragon's parade

Dragon's parade!

I was imagining a world where dragon exists. What kind of world will that be? One thing for sure, we will "humanely" exploit them for our entertainment! Most probably we might be using them as a sport and of course gambling!

Yet I didnt want to show them in a negative light so I chose a more festive feel. (Since my birthday just past and I am feeling really happy!) So I thought what if they have a parade after they won the race? Just like when you played chocobo racing or mario kart the winner will go around the laps, with the victory song blaring out!

This first idea came from sketch ideation sessions that I had as a break after work.
It was a truly fruitful sessions as I had a couple of ideas that I really liked and enjoyed from the sketches. I might take some of them and flesh them out more in the future.

Its really rough but if you are interested I have placed it below.

I kinda used up all my time between the painting and hanging out w fams, instead of the dailies.. now I have to try to repay the debt!! (Manage to catch up w my dailies!)

Face Value Study 3

Another quick one, 30mins.

Tried skipping the sketching section and went straight to value shapes.
I still struggle with accuracy.

Face Value Study

I have been musing how to come up with my own style for a while now..

Recently, something clicked on my mind on one of the solo sketching trip I had. Just gonna write it here so I could look back and remember it in case I lost my way again or if one day people like me, could read it and help them to find their own path!

I think style could be how a person view the world.. kinda like a journal of the person’s life. What is important, whats not, whats their personal interest and what does the person want to experiment and delve into at that moment.

Currently, on a personal level, I really enjoy trying simplify everything, to group things up as much as possible. I especially like how Gustav Klimt simplify his subjects! Also, I specially chose to do referenced photo studies so that I don’t have to think too much in terms of design and I could experiment on the more artistic side.

The reason why I am prioritizing to simplify the subject is due to the fact that eversince I was in school, I have had a habit of over complicating things and trying to draw everything I see. This make things very hard to fix later on and I ended up spend so much time on one piece ( not in a good way).. also I often confused myself and lost track of what was it that I wanted to do.

Its really reinvigorating to find this realization! I get excited to do my dailies now since its a space and special time for me to try and experiment.

Star Ocean 2 Fanart

I wonder how many people know this old IP. This is my bro fave game as a child, he used to play it so much I grew sick listening to the battle song, I can still hum it now and its on my head as I painted it.

Was working on this belated birthday card for my bro on my free time so didn't have time to do more studies.Gonna try to catch up this weekend!

Dragoon Sketch

Inspired by Dragoons Cavalry costumes.
This was done on span of 3 days (2-3 hours session each) everyday before work.

I am going back to fundamental and gonna do more sketches for the upcoming few weeks.
I realize I am really envious of people who can draw really well and I am gonna strive to up my drawing skills!

Do let me know which design do you like out of these three!

Automata Street

Another even tighter shot of the townscape. Taking the chance to experiment with color and value grouping to try to push the story telling component of the image.

This time around I tried to take the story and try to take more liberty in showing it visually. I wanted to show the lady on the foreground to have a hesitant personality and perhaps often fearful of things, thus I put her in the dark. She is being pulled into the light by the samurai guy as if lighting up her life. Also tried to reflect that feeling of hope into the landscape itself (ray of light on the sky) I also wanted the surrounding to be cooler in temperature in comparison to the character hand, as if the body heat radiating the image.

I ended up removing the smoke effects since I thought it distract the viewer from the ray of light, also contradicting the feeling of burst of hope.

I have also been kinda worried that my color could be getting more and more saturated yet in a not so good direction so I tried to study from Krenz Cushart's work since a his work uses lots of gray yet feels so vibrant!

This time around I was more careful on where I used the saturated color but I tried to be less controlled when it comes to the edges and details since I felt the last two paintings was so controlled that it felt rigid and less lively.

I really hope to one day able to be as painterly as Craig Mullins!

Automata Town

Some shot from above, exploring the townscape.
Trying to imagine what kind of town could be beyond the gate.

I was imagining a town ran by blacksmith and researcher, developing automata mecha as the guardian and weapons to protect the town. The city are multi layered just like japanese castle. Since the smiths are important members of the town they get to live on the higher ground. Its not only for distinction, being nearer to the mountain also help to regulate the temperature of the smith and considered as sacred.

This is a continuation of the steampunk project that I posted previously. I ended up flipping the sketch for better composition. Please feel free to give me feedback on how to improve it much further! :D

Automata City Gate

Something I have been wanting to draw.. Japanese steampunk town.

I took some inspiration from Onimusha and Kabaneri. The architecture was based on the quick sketches that I did when I was on holiday. I will scan those and post it up when I am free.

Here is the early sketch.
I think it was much more exaggerated in the sketch. What do you think? Let me know!

40 Min Virtual Plein Air

Quick 40min morning virtual plein air before flight.

I will edit my post when I am back from holiday to reflect on my study!

1 hour Virtual Plein Air

1 hour Lunch Virtual Plein Air study.

I havent been doing this for a while and decided to record myself as I paint, it was really nerve wrecking. At the end of the 1 hour timer I was sweating and panicking.

It was really fun to rewatch it though.

Definitely saw various pipeline fixup that has to be implemented into my future workflow:
1. Streamlining my thought process
2. sticking more closely to step by step process that I have in mind.
3. simplify some stuff
4. dont be too tense and sticking too closely to the source material due to it
5. careful time management

Inktober 2016- Lets Eat!

Series of ink drawings that I did for inktober 2016.

Inspired by masterpiece such as yakitate japan and cooking master boy, I have been dying to create a world of fantasy and food (two of the things I enjoyed)

This is a very late post for inktober but I didn't post it during that time as I was too intimidated by the tonnes of amazing ink drawing that was on the social media. Then today when I was cleaning the desk I found them and after talking to couple of friends I decided to post it up. It was really fun to draw them so hopefully you will enjoy looking at them too!
