Inspired and I continue Dreaming

Inspirational Artists: Pascal Campion from Onyx Cinema, Inc. on Vimeo.

I was drawing w near @ teadot earlier and was discussing with him regarding artist fear of being ridiculed. We fear to show our work.. even in our sketches, we wish it to be perfect.. even though those are only meant for our own research and reference... there is a part of you that wants it to look good and beautiful... In maths, these sketches would be equivalent to those mathematical calculation that we did on scrap paper...

Yet, knowing these, why do we fear so much? is it our pride?

To quote:
Many great ideas have been lost because the people who had them could not stand being laughed at. - Author Unknown

I was brought up in a strict catholic Asian family... and my parents used to care a lot about appearance.. especially my mom. When I was in primary school she will compare me to top ranking students. Even when I was one of the few people in the class to score, she will still compare me to an even better student. When I retort, she will reply, "If he/she can do it, why cant you?"

Sometime I think to myself, is it the way I was brought up that create so many fear and low self confidence in me? But then... I think again... There is no use in blaming the environment or anyone... in the end, its up to you on how you want to live your life. Do you want to stand up and make a change? Do you want to mope around and continue to wish?

I strongly believe, in life, one should never stop. Slow down yes, but do not stop moving. Crawl if you have to. Having a pride for your work is good but being proud and full of yourself is a path that will lead to self destruction. I have seen many artist (in my short life span) that stopped growing because they believe they have reached the peak.. If you think you are one of them, ask yourself, do you really believe your work is the best in the whole world? Look around you, ask 10 random passerby and your closest family, let see what do they have to say.

I was asked recently by a friend who wish to pick up drawing again... How can she improve? I told her to draw and draw and get criticized. There is really no shortcut to happiness here. Be persistent, draw and draw...There is no such thing as A WASTE OF AN EFFORT! Do not abandon your work, come back and rework on it. When someone is commenting on your work, listen! Do not make excuses, its the same as lying to yourself. Having a thundercloud expression when someone is advising you on how to improve is definitely not a good habit, it will discourage people from trying to help you improve.

Also, a reminder to myself too, Be humble always... The older you get the harder it is for you to learn because we get conceited and we refuse to listen from the younger people. Swallow your pride for once.

I am also trying to be more humble, ridiculing myself all the time seems to work... a tiny bit. :p

For clarification issue, I do not despise my mom cause of her treatment to me, it somehow makes me persistent. Even when someone tells me I am not a natural born artist, I keep telling myself, well if he can draw, why cant I? I will draw even more and more! Anyway I am addicted to it... And it also suit my life principles.

1.I live with knowledge of living to the day I die in happiness.

2.No regret. Break through all.

When you are young, you creates an identity, when you are adult you work to accept the flawed identity you have created, when you are old, you try to live with it. Just be happy and make do with what you have... at the end of the day, have fun, do not lose your dream and... thank you to DAVID CHOI for sharing all this wonderful quote...!!
