World Design

Various design practices I have been doing on my free time.

Taking inspiration from ossuary and skeleton and spines

 

Inspired from seaweed/algae and Victorian era greenhouse

I decided to do another one of my samurai jizo world exploration.

Thought would be fun to do something crazy..  I always enjoyed reading about space and rockets.. so I decided to mashed them with cathedral design language.. space cathedral?? it became kinda crazy to design in the end lol I was stuck for a while when sketching.

Another ambitious one, wanted to try to do a townscape that are in a cave or on the cliff side, I think the final image didnt manage to bring out the potential I had in mind.. definitely will return to this concept in the future exploration!

Environment Design Linework

I am really bad with linework so this was an attempt to be better at it..  as a consolation though, it was really fun to design the environment.

For the first two image I was heavily inspired by Japanese culture, since I was just there not that long ago and took tonnes of ref images so I wanted to use them. I tried to push in them in totally opposite direction from each other, with the first one more of a ancient samurai statue/golem that had gone through decays and taken over by nature. I thought it would also be interesting to have the torii gate as the sword instead of the normal katana as a way to create unique spin to the culture and I thought it would also be fun to have perhaps a broken helmet, maybe fallen down from one of the statue as a way for the character to go up and get a better view of the surrounding or if its a stage design, it could be reused later on as part of the puzzle or obstacles.

In the second image I was thinking of waterfall/dam and castle. This time around I took some influence from the japanese mask and demon and tried to integrate it to the building to try to create sort of a demon city. I was worried to over detail the building at the background ..and was not sure how much detail is good to place there.

In the third image I went to totally different direction and used influence from egypt culture, I thought of some religious ground or temple. with a misty/sandstorm-ish background of far away buildings.

Corridors of Time

Mysterious Castle

trying to regurgitate my lighting and mood study. Limited myself to 3 hr to work on this. 1 hr for thumbs/composition sketch and another 2 to paint and fix perspective.. I need to find a more efficient way to paint and to make it looks finished.

War Scene

Recently received some notes on to try out more experimental methods and about trying to work looser (which ironically what I had been trying to avoid the past year) so here it is! Thought of these as a sequence of the movie where the two armies are facing one another and the general preparing to charge in any second from now.

I have been watching some old fantasy/medieval war movies recently (300/Kingdom of heaven/avatar to name a few) so just thought I am gonna do a shout out to these movies that has been a huge part of my childhood.

Ruins Jungle

RX-071 lit the cigarette. The nicotine taste spread throughout his taste bud.. it was..intoxicating.

"Are you sure you could do that? Won't captain be angry?"

RX-023, his ever anxious colleague tapped his shoulder. Fully equipped in his body armor, he stood in full alert..

"Heh its alright, he won't notice. Not when he is too busy learning about this god forsaken place." RX-071 puffed away at his cigarette. "Anyway relax, won't you? Take out your helmet and breath in some fresh air."

RX-023, shifted. He doesn't like this place.. uncharted territory, unfamiliar creature and.. they had been separated from their squad. "Its fine.. I feel more comfortable in this helmet.. We will never know what toxic gas the plants in this area could emit.."

"Hmm suit yourself...but if there is ever a toxic gas.. that insane captain ahead of us would have been dead long time ago." RX-071 chuckled.

"..I guess you are right.. but you know.. just in case.....Whats that?" RX-023 heard a strange sound, he looked around with the gun pointed in front of him.

"Just the birds... restless we intruded into their nests. Stop being so paranoid... the radar would have notified us of any strange prese..."

RX-023 never heard the rest of the sentence from his friend.

In my previous work I received various feedback and concluded my weakness to be:
1. Value
2. Composition
3. Material.

Thus in this work I try to address those.

I was reflecting what do I love when I do art.. I guess it has to be story telling, I had a premise of some ruins jungle when I started but as I painted I came out with some stories of this place. :D

Feel free to let me know what you guys feel about the work or about the horrendous story (with awesome-ly horrendous grammar <3)

here is a random one hour practice... +- 15 minutes per thumbs.

Some random after work/lunch practice. Practicing my speed, limited to 10-30 mins! Also experimenting on diff stuff, blending option etc.
